These are my wishes too

No more lives torn apart
and wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown up christmas list
I was on my way home when this song suddenly played on the car's radio. I've heard the song before but it's only now that I've had the chance to really listen to it. I just love the sincerity. I almost cried.

My Bestfriend's a Rock Star

She's one of my best friends. And she's one of the people I admire most. Currently, she's in China, working her ass off to help her family. She's selfless and strong, ambitious and determined, creative and profound.

She could rock any outfit like nobody's business. She laughs out loud, whenever, wherever. She's there in a jiffy when I needed to talk or when I'm bored. She's an expert when it comes to Ukay - ukay. She does the most stupid things, yet she could tell me about those things with no shame or regret. She loves life.

I couldn't, for the life of me, live like she does. I'm too frail and scared. haha!
She's the biggest rock star in my whole wide universe! ;)

Here's to Good Friends

I have the perfect Playmates!
Cheers to my friend, Che, who took the LET with an effing hangover but still passed!
And here's to the Tekken boys for taking care of road matters, kahit naligaw ligaw tayo!
I was very well taken care of that day! Thank you! =)

Another Post About...

New Moon is a movie about teenagers, one a vampire and the other a lumbering pale girl, who experienced the topsy-turvy emotions of being in love. It’s settled. The plot is lame and cheesy.

Edward. I’m sorry to say but a man like Edward Cullen is nothing but a fantasy. And it’s not just the part about him being immortal. A handsome, strong, witty, intelligent, talented, profound, extremely loving and thoughtful man simply does not exist. The character is too perfect. Even his flaws look cute. Yes, love makes all things beautiful. But if you go around looking and wishing for an Edward to sweep you off of your clumsy feet, you’re up for a big fall.

Bella is a lamb.. a stupid, clumsy lamb. She pranced into the arms of danger when she allowed herself to fall in love with a man who admitted that he wanted nothing more than to kill her. At 18 when the man she adored told her the she was not the one he wanted, she went into a slobfest for more than 3 months. She even made terrible decisions that could have brought more drama into her life. She was weak and extremely insecure.

Jacob. If anything, he has to know when enough is enough. Would I call him emotional? No. He was the one who was able to control his emotions better than anyone else. He stepped back when Bella needed space. He steps in when she needed him. But like I said, know when enough is enough.

It is an unrealistically corny movie. But c’mon, who wouldn’t admit to feeling those exact same emotions (or at least would’ve want to feel them) back when we were still young and foolish.

I used to dream of an Edward. When I thought I found him, I became as stupid and as senseless as Bella. I have had nice people to be my Jacob’s and I’ve hurt them in ways more than one. Since then I’ve come to an agreement with myself that I wouldn’t look for an Edward. I would never be as stupid as Bella. I would never again use people like Jacob to help me heal myself.

Once in a while I find myself lurching in these same situations over again. But I have my scar to remind me not to tread that road of emotional upheaval.

I am a hopeless romantic hiding beneath the veils of cynicism; torn between a dream and the reality. I’ve discarded my naiveté about romance and I’m trying to learn how it is to truly love without losing my mind.

I've still lots to learn. But I'll get there.

Rotten Politics

We live in a world in which politics has replaced philosophy. ~Martin L. Gross, A Call for Revolution, 1993

Bits of news usually seep into my bloodstream through Tweets, Facebook Updates and the occasional TV on the bus. I rarely watch television and, honestly, I don’t intentionally pick up a newspaper to keep up with what’s happening.

Monday was a very busy day for me in the clinics. That was why when I heard Dr.T commenting on the Maguindanao Massacre, I wasn’t really listening. I went on with my day as I usually would.

It was just yesterday when I found out about it. I was on a bus with my ears plugged with phones, trying to drown the noise pollution with music. I casually threw a glance toward the television and I saw it; “Maguindanao Massacre”. My eyes were suddenly wide with disbelief. I pulled my earphones off hastily and tried to listen to what was being said. Apparently, because of Politics, 52 people were savagely killed. (Google it, as if you need to. It’s all over.)

It was a picture of pure evil. How can anyone take so many lives just because they can?

A number of families will be celebrating the holidays this year void of a loved one’s presence because other people’s greed, pride, and lust for power. We could only hope and pray that justice will be served. But quite frankly, aasa pa ba tayo?

On Nothing

When Facebook becomes boring and Twitter offers nothing new, I resort to Blogger to cure my boredom.

We woke up early this morning to bring my brother to the airport. He’s going away for a few days to compete in an “Asian-wide” research contest. Basta he’d be presenting their research about a dental material derived from an organic source. We’re all so proud of him. And I think I handled my separation anxiety attacks pretty well. I’m so proud of myself. Haha!

After making sure my brother got to his destination safely, I had nothing to do but think about my appointments tomorrow. I had to, once again, face one of my biggest fears in Dentistry – kids. Children could be many things. They could be a joy but they could also be such pain in the a*s sometimes. My patient tries to scream her tonsils off whenever we have an appointment. And I just dread the time I have to see her again. And that day is tomorrow. Ayayaaay!

O well.. so much for this post. Everything’s ok. I just feel I still lack something to be passionate about. I’m thinking about volunteering in Sunday School. But I’m not so sure I could handle a handful of kids, screaming all at the same time.
I need to sharpen my blogging skills. This post sucks.

New Moon

For me the bravest men are those who could go in a movie theater, watch a total chic flick, and survive to tell the tale!

I watched the much anticipated movie, New Moon. I’ve bought all the books in the twilight saga but I have not finished reading New Moon when I got kind of bored about the whole plot. Nonetheless, I was excited as the opening of the movie drew nearer and nearer. My anticipation was even more heightened when I found out that Dakota Fanning would be in the film.

I’m not going to say much about the movie, but as expected, the movie, and the lines were cheesy enough to make me squirm. Lines like, “You make me happy just by breathing.” made me want to wish that I watched the movie with Gayle instead. I think she’d be able to stomach it more since she read the book too. But Jacob (Lautner) was indeed dreamy, if you’re into those kinds of guys. What I find lovable about him though is that he’s so real. I don’t know why I just felt that he connected with me more than Edward’s character did. Kristen Stewart lost her headband, which was good. She looked really pretty but she has this one expression that she used all throughout the film. Yung parang duling. Oh anyway, I enjoyed watching it, only because of those scenes that made me nod and say, “yep, that’s how I imagined that scene when I was reading the book.”.

Would I recommend New Moon? hmmm.. watch 2012 na lang. haha. I’d be watching it later with my sister and cousins!

I’m looking forward to Holmes and A Christmas Carol. -> need movie dates. Who’s up? Text me friends.”,

Shedding

I am amazed at people’s capacity to be insecure. I am no exemption, I must admit, but heck, I didn’t imagine that other people, especially men, could have bigger issues than me.

I also realized just recently that boys, just like women, like attention. They feed off of it. They couldn’t live without it; without someone to send text messages to, without someone to flirt with. It drives me mad.

But while I was doing my devotions this morning, I think finally understood. We all desire unfailing love. The tough guy, the weakling, the diva, the rockstar, the nerd, the addict, the movie star, the movie goer – everyone, whether they admit it or not, everyone is looking for unfailing love.

I found it; an unfailing love that would not change no matter what. So I’m slowly shedding away my insecurities. But the process is painful. It is a mind over matter thing, I guess.

On a final note; Though it is understandable and highly normal that men have insecurities as much as women do, please do not be so obvious about it. It makes you look weak.

See you later, beyotch!

I’m getting better at it – dealing with grief because of lost of a loved one.
Not more than 3 years ago, I lost one of the most special people in my life. And just a week ago, I lost one of my dear friends.

I have known J for over 8 years now. We have been close friends when she was 15 and I was just 18 years old. She was the one who knew all my secrets. And I mean all of them. It was true what most people said, with her, you can let your guards down because as a friend, you are assured that she’ll never judge and she’ll always care.
We were mean when we were together back then. We’d lash out on guys that pissed us off. We would ignore anyone na di namin feel. She’d tolerate my kaartehans and all my flirtations with guys. It was fun. Not good fun but fun fun.
It came to a point when I felt I outgrew her. I “left” her because I felt I was too mature to be acting like her. But in hinds view, I wasn’t any more mature than she was. I just pretended I was. And I knew I hurt her in ways only she could have tolerated.

Years passed and we stayed connected because we “had” to. It was just a year ago when I finally said I missed her. And after that our hostility toward each other was lessened. Friendship like before was not restored to its original state but I was happy I could talk to her again, even if it was just about shoes and fashion.
Tuesday night last week, J got into an accident. She was in terrible shape when she was brought to the hospital. Tita A called me and said she wanted to talk to my mom. I had no idea what it was about until my mom responded with a hysterical “ano?!”. My parents rushed to the hospital to be with J’s parents. But my brother and I stayed home because we were afraid we couldn’t handle seeing our friend in a dire condition.

Before morning broke, J suffered from several cardiopulmonary arrests, five broken ribs, multiple skull fractures and a lot of broken bones all over her body before she finally breathed her last.

We were not able to say goodbye. Regret sucks.

Grief from losing J and memories of grief from losing Txian flooded me that day. Everything was all too familiar. But I think I handled it better this time.
Losing someone hurts, whether if it’s because of an accident or a sickness or whatever cause. Regret over words unsaid and things undone haunts. But one of the most comforting facts is that I know that J is in a better place – all “prettified” – just the way she would want it!

She will be sorely missed. Her loud laughter would forever ring in the silence of CCF’s halls. Her passion for life and her joy for the little things will be treasured. And my memory of a dear little sister, my partner in crime, my beyotch (oh yeah we used to call each other b*tch! Haha), my biggest fashion critic will be kept until the day we meet again.

(To J; wag mo kong ichismis dyan. Haha. We love you. I love you. I hope in some way you felt that, even if words were left unsaid.)

Update at Last

Bulaga!
Haha. I’m back – not primarily because I miss blogging but because I ran out of things to do. I don’t want to run on the treadmill without the DVD player because it’s so boring. I did not go to the dinner date slash basketball game with my friends because I’m broke. I’ve read all my latest magazines – twice! I watched all the latest episodes of Gossip Girl and Glee. I ran out of things to do.
But there are lots to write about. So let’s start..

Retail Therapy. I’ve recently discovered how a little shopping could go a long way in terms of cheering me up. I know I’m on the road to ruins. Thank God I’m still dependent on the allowance I’m given because if I’m earning my own money, things could be worse. Whenever I’m in a rut, I’d find a way to go somewhere I could buy something. If I have the money, I’d usually splurge on beauty products, especially make – up. If I don’t I’d still look for something that’s cheap. Just yesterday, I was feeling really low, so on the way to UP, I passed by National Bookstore and I looked around. I did not need anything in particular. But when I saw those colorful highlighters, I wanted to buy one in each color. Good thing I just had around 60 pesos in my pocket – I bought two, orange and green. I rationalized that I’d soon be reviewing for the board exams so might as well buy highlighters to prop me up. Besides, I heard that green and orange stimulate the mind.

And so I’m broke. I know I need to get a hold of myself. But it just feels so good. Lalo na pag may hawak na kong paper bag ng Faceshop or Body Shop. Ayayay!

Moving on. Dr. T, one of my favorite professors, had recently been nominated to be dean of our dear college. As most would remember, Dr. T is the one who gave me failing grades twice (or was it thrice?). He’s very strict and has unbreakable ideals. Lately though, I’ve been witness to his slight change of character. I’ve seen him around some of his preclinical students and he was amazingly, unbelievably nice. He has been a teacher more than half of his life.

Another professor, Dr.M, is also nominated. He’s also a favorite because he’s always been nice to me. I enjoy his lectures and his exams as they are practical. Anyway, I admire his flagship for the college. It was simple and direct.

If for loyalty’s sake, I’d prefer Dr.T to be dean. Of course, I’m biased because he’s my favorite teacher. But all candidates are great teachers. And I’d love to see those plans in action.

Enough. I’m moving on to my next post..

Puerto Galera is Nothing Special

I just have to do this.

Internet addiction. That’s my alibi for not updating. Facebook, Twitter, Lookbook, Chictopia, and shopping through Multiply. Ayaayaaay! I need to get a hold of myself.

Anyway, I’ve been reading my friends’ blogs and I realized I have to write about my Puerto Galera trip a week ago. So here goes.. as far as my very faulty short term memory serves me….

The girls have been planning a trip since last year, but plans only pushed through a week ago. We went to PG (go figure). I was very glad that my parents allowed me to go. Well, of course, I know for a fact that the people I’m with were plus factors for the “permission granted” as they were close family friends and church mates, siguro my dad thought they were all “good”. Haha. Kidding.

I’m not a fan of sleeping that’s why I didn’t have trouble waking up at 3:30am to prepare for the trip. I didn’t sleep much on the way there either. I spent the hours stuck in traffic in SLEX looking out the window and trying not to think about anything. That was when I saw one of my professors. He was, of course, driving a car and I couldn’t possibly try to wave him down to say hello. But even if I could, I wouldn’t. haha. It was just a pleasant surprise to see him.

When we arrived at Batangas Port, I was a bit anxious. I have never planned a vacation on my own. I have never gone on a trip without having secured reservations first. During our trip, C and M said we would just deal with everything as we go along; no reservations whatsoever. Good thing we had “I” and A with us. They were the ones who handled “transactions”. I felt I was in good hands. Naks!

After a one - hour boat ride, we finally arrived at PG. My first thought was that it’s a smaller version of Boracay, mainly because of the numerous stalls of souvenir shops along the beach. It was highly commercialized, just like Boracay. The difference is, it’s way cheaper in PG.

It was lunch when we arrived and I have not eaten a decent breakfast - I was starving. So I was silently urging them to just get any hotel room so we could go eat. But “I”was very meticulous; checking the rooms, comparing prices… it’s a good thing though because we were able to save a lot of moola because of his undisputed haggling skills.

Food in PG was nothing special. Period.

What I particularly enjoyed during our trip was the banana boat ride. Snorkeling was fun too, but the current was just so strong. Na-lamog lang kami. Although the banana boat ride wasn’t painless, it was more fun than being dragged into coral reefs. Di ba Jenna? Before we went onto the “banana” my friends said that the experience would be like riding the Space Shuttle in EK. But it felt nothing like that. Space Shuttle is more frightening. The BBR (figure it out again) experience was just.. chill. Haha. The exciting part is the “Drop”. Although, thinking about it now, I didn’t enjoy salt water up my nostrils. Ugh.

So I guess PG is nothing special to me. Food, accommodations, the beach – it was just nice but not extraordinarily nice. What I did love about my weekend there was that I was able to spend time with my most trusted friends. Some of these friends I have known for years. I know they genuinely love me and care for me. I also enjoyed discovering new and interesting things about these friends. Haha. We should do that more often – the “tough questions – tough answers” portion. Loved it!

Ooh this is getting a bit long. And my short term memory is about to fail me. I couldn’t probably write all the details but know that this is trip is going down my “top list”.

Credits:

To the organizers, C, M and J; thank you for researching and for not reserving anything. Haha. It made the experience more exciting. Seriously, thanks for coordinating. It must have been a bit frustrating lalo na if kami yung kasama. Haha.

To Ate A and I: Thanks for being the best “hagglers”. Haha. Thanks for taking initiative always. You two are always a step ahead of everyone else.

To the Beloved Princess: I enjoyed sharing a bed with you. Behave e. haha. Thanks for the devotion that morning. I’ll share with you what I experienced pa pala.

Kuya M: Now I know not to talk to you when you lack sleep. Haha. Kulit. Thanks for being our “kuya”.

To S: Thanks for coming, Had lots of fond (and not so fond) memories with you. Stay annoying. Kidding.

To those who weren’t able to go: be sure to be on the next trip. Palawan daw on December! Woot!”,

Out of Space

If all problems feel like this, let me have 'em all!!!
My closet's full too. I'm my mom's daughter - no one could argue that.

24 - Kobe Age

((Jordan age has passed. I like 23 better.)

It doesn’t feel any different; being 24.

But I do feel I’m immature for my age. Well sige, maybe not immature, maybe the word is inexperienced. I feel that at my age I should have at least graduated from school, I should have been able to travel outside the country...

At my age I should know how it feels to truly live. Sure, I have moments when I felt alive but to really live is still a very elusive dream. My friend, G, provoked this train of thought during one of the conversations we had over lunch. She said she merely existed; walking through life because she needed to.

I would like to believe I know my purpose. But it’s very easing to lose sight of what is truly important in life when I’m stuck here; in school, struggling against myself.

Enough boring ramblings.

I celebrated my birthday last Friday with a few of my friends by having a “board game party”. It was fun. And I got my balloons; lots of them. But the hype of blogging about an event almost a week ago is almost gone. And I’m so lazy these days.

For my next birthday I’m planning on a formal dinner; wine and all. But I’m undecided between that or a “dirty ice cream” party. Hihi. At 25? Hmm.. I wonder what would be more appropriate. Ice cream it is!

Fun Weekends

I’ve been on the internet for a little over 6 hours already. (Don’t mention anything to my Dad. He already tried to limit my internet usage by asking me to “deposit” the laptop in his bedroom by 9pm! So I use the psp from then onwards. Very sneaky me!) Anyway, I’ve been trying to look for the oxford flats I so wanted. I didn’t find them. But instead I found a dozen other pairs I want. (Visit soleshoes.multiply.) Online shopping could really be addicting.

Aside from my renewed and rejuvenated compulsion to shop for clothes and shoes, I also had a revived sense of belongingness as I spent the past few weekends with my friends.

First of, I’ve been chatting with J more often now. Her passion for fashion is one thing I really admire about her. She could make 50-peso shirts look really expensive. I mean, it’s her style. Basta. Love it. These past few days we’ve been exchanging links and photos of shoes and clothes and bags we want to buy. Of all my friends I rely on her when I need a fashion fix. Love her to pieces!

Back here in ph, I have a few friends that I envy when it comes to being fashion forward. Also, I covet their height; they are all model-tall. Among these friends, JZ is the most daring when it comes to fashion. A.M., however has a more polished and sophisticated style. M, AM’s little sister, isn’t so far behind her ate’s footsteps when it comes to dressing up. Her style is more playful, quirky and fun.

Heto na yung kwento. Last Sunday, as I was lounging in my Dad’s office, these three stomped in and asked me if I wanted to go to Trinoma with them. I asked them why and they answered, “Titingin lang ng shoes.” It was amusing but I went with them and had fun. ‘Ze boys came with us and had a hard time waiting for us rummage all the stores in Trinoma. I bought a pair of heeled oxfords in Charles and Keith. I wore them this morning and felt tall. Hahaha.

That trip to Trinoma was the start of my downward spiral into the pits of being a shopaholic again. Oh and I switched magazines from C to Preview.

Veering away from my “fashionista” friends, I spent the most hilarious day with the boys yesterday. It was unplanned but fun nonetheless. It was understandable that I didn’t even feel a bit awkward with them since I’ve known a few of them since 2nd year HS. They talked about their crushes, teasing each other every chance they get. I asked them about their “type” of girls, their ex girl friends and well, we also talked about fashion. At least L and I did. Haha. Jumpers? Haha!

I’ve had fun weekends. Thanks to friends. Miss you all so much.

It’s my birthday week! I’m planning a “Game Night” on Friday. Excited!

Wishlist (Suntok sa Buwan)

I don't know if it's just me but do "things" become more desirable when your birthday is just around the corner? hahaha. I am well aware that I share my birthday with my sister and with a good friend but this is my blog and I'm going to publish my wishlist, hoping against all hopes that by some freak accident I will get what I want.

  1. A pair of oxford flats. But a more "girly" one. I don't know where to find them. I searched the net though and I found tons. So I'm guessing they're available here somewhere.
  2. A shopping spree at Topshop or Dorothy Perkins or Charles and Keith.
  3. A Shu Uemura eyelash curler and make up remover.
  4. A hot pink camera bag from Crumpler.
  5. A Nikon D90 or a Canon 500d. (Oh I think this one's for graduation.)
  6. A free pass from my parents to celebrate my birthday with friends. I miss my friends! According to them, I'm inaccessible! haha
  7. For time to pass quickly so it could be August's end already.
  8. For people to understand why I'm still in school and for them to stop asking me questions about when I'll graduate.
  9. For my pimples to miraculously vanish into thin air. Or maybe products that could make them disappear.
  10. A dimploma, a PRC license, a fully equipped dental clinic - in short, real life to begin. (Oh yeah, I have to work on this one on my own. bah!)

I had to stop myself from listing down everything! haha! I'll be turning 24 soon. And gawd do I have a lot of catching up to do. Have to run after what's left of my life! I know 24 is young, but I want to start young. Anyway, I'm just having fun today. Don't want this entry to turn into a sappy pity party post.

Oh I read from Sarah Meier's tweet that writing about how you felt after a day is better than rambling on about what actually happened. So maybe I'll try that more often.

*PS. Forgive mispelled words or wrong grammar. I was typing real quick. And no time to edit now.

__ I have a happy heart! =)

Lazy, Lazy Day

I did a very unusual thing today; I watched television the whole day!

I rarely watch TV simply because I can't find anything worth my time. If I have free time I'd rather surf the net or read a book. But since I was left home - alone today, I had pandesal for lunch and sat in front of the TV for more than 6 hours straight.

Because of this I realized that watching TV could be productive. Well, not really. But I did discover a few things from my lazy day:

- I found out about Jon and Kate and their adorable kids. I have been hearing about them for so long now but I just had the sense to google them today.
- On Tyra, a show I'd rather not watch but did because of boredom, I found out about people who are "fat admirers". It was, uhm, fascinating that some people find flabs of fat and cellulites attractive. (And there I was "lunching" on pandesal!) Frankly, I think it's sick to wish to be 1000lbs.
- I finally was able to watch the music video for Nobody. I was staring at the Wonder Girls, half aware that I could be drooling over their cute faces and long legs. haha! They're pretty!
- Project Runway Philippines Season 2 will air it's pilot episode tonight at ETC.
- Vanessa Hudgens' nude photos are, again, leaked into the internet.
- Chace Crawford hooked up with Twilight start, Ashley Greene (Alice). The two were seen lip locking in a limo after the Teen Choice Awards.
- Leighton Meester has a sex video!

Ok so maybe it wasn't a worthwhile activity after all. haha! I'm so hooked on Hollywood gossip right now. This isn't good.

About tomorrow, I'm so relieved that it's going to be an "easy" day with just my RPD to block out and an amalgam onlay to finish. I'm planning to go to PCX and find the perfect solution for my ever growing pimple mark collection. Ugh!

You said that I will be ok

Broken by Lifehouse
The broken clock is a comfort, it helps me sleep tonight
Maybe it can stop tomorrow from stealing all my time
I am here still waiting though I still have my doubts
I am damaged at best, like you've already figured out

I'm falling apart, I'm barely breathing
With a broken heart that's still beating
In the pain there is healing
In your name I find meaning

So I'm holdin' on, I'm holdin' on, I'm holdin' on
I'm barely holdin' on to you

The broken locks were a warning you got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded, I'm an open book instead
I still see your reflection inside of my eyes
That are looking for a purpose, they're still looking for life

I'm hangin' on another day
Just to see what you will throw my way
And I'm hanging on to the words you say
You said that I will be ok

The broken lights on the freeway left me here alone
I may have lost my way now, haven't forgotten my way home

Relationship requires a lot of effort.

This I learned through friendships strained by distance. I am not really good at long distance relationships. I find it difficult and tedious to keep in touch through the internet. Maybe my detachment stems from the feeling that it doesn’t actually feel like you’re talking to a person when you’re reading an email or when you’re chatting through YM.

One of my best friends moved to China because of her work. It has been months since I really talked to her. And I wanted so badly to tell her about the things that are happening to me. Not serious things, really. Just day to day nothingness that usually make their way to her through a text message or a phone call. But now that she’s miles away, an email of, say, how I thought I elicited the attention of a certain med student, doesn’t really seem appropriate. Parang I feel that it would just take up a bulk of her email space. So I just let nothingness after nothingness pass and when I finally catch her online and she asks what the “latest” is, nothing of significance comes to mind.

I rarely update her. And it saddens me that I couldn’t go the extra mile to send her a worthwhile email.

My “China” friend and I are separated by distance. And it’s difficult. But I also have friendships that are strained not because of distance but by well, I really don’t know. A few posts ago I said I became cold and indifferent. So maybe it started there. I just got tired of texting and replying to text messages. I was so caught up with everything I had to do and I lost track of everything and everyone else. I don’t do well in multi-tasking. And my puny brain could only handle so much trouble. When I set my mind on a goal, I focus and forget everything else.

So my relationships were strained. And I’m trying to get them back in shape. But it takes effort and time. I’m learning. And I just want my friends to know (especially my fashion police, my wedding dress designer, my ultimate “kakampi”) that I miss the great friendships I share with you all.

I miss how we could just stay up well into the night and just talk about anything. I miss how we could just decide to meet up and pig out on pizza and ice cream. I miss how you could make me feel better by taking my side even if I know that you’re a bit biased. I miss how we could spend the afternoon just mall ratting. I miss you, more than words could say. And heck, I know you’ll say I’m baduy and jologs, but who cares. I know you miss me too.

I've heard people complain about technology cutting personal relationships and replacing them with cyber ones. But when put into a situation where personal relationships are severed by distance, technology is one fine friend.

I Couldn't Help Myself

Many mourned the death of King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I do not in any way demean the man’s great and unmatched contribution to pop culture, music and history. But I think the death of President Corazon Aquino merits more attention, if not from the whole world, at least from our nation.

History is one of my least favorite subjects. And I was only taught to be a critical thinker when I entered college. So needless to say, I know little about Cory and her administration. What I do know is that she was a strong, determined, well – educated woman, who fought for her family, her faith and her nation’s freedom.

My parents are Martial Law Babies. And it was inevitable that they became sentimental when they learned of Cory’s death.

My dad said that Cory’s death somehow represents the marking down of their generation’s history. Sooner or later, young people would only have heard of the Martial Law, the People Power Revolution, Ninoy and Cory inside their history classes. Soon, Cory’s memory and her passion for democracy would only be read in books.

My mom on the other hand, chose to see the “drama” in all of these. She said that Ninoy wrote a poem for Cory when he was in prison. I think it has the lines “I fell in love with the same woman three times…” or something like that. She was almost in tears when she said that she hopes Ninoy and Cory would find each other on the other side of life.

Do you want to know what my reaction was upon hearing about the news? I immediately thought of Kris and how she would present herself before the media. I’m sorry for my superficiality. I was sick and I slept through the whole Saturday. It was just today that I fully understood how much Cory meant to the Filipino people.

I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.” - Cory

I think President Aquino lived a life brimming with meaning and purpose. And in her death, the passion for which she did the things she so bravely accomplished reignited the fire in each and every Filipino's heart.

About Need; A Day with PNP Trainees

A few weeks ago I was given a rare opportunity to be with some 400 PNP Trainees in Angeles, Pampanga. Our church was requested to conduct a “Purpose Driven Life” Seminar for the said people. As far as I know, General Razon ordered that PNP officials undergo PDL Seminars as a requirement under their program to improve values among policemen. So anyway, my Dad wanted me to go help out at that seminar. I really didn’t want to but since I am eager to please, I went.

I was really hesitant because I haven’t read PDL in so long and I didn’t know who were coming with me. The night before the seminar, I was even trying to get out of it by telling organizers that I don’t have a means of going to the meeting place at such an early hour. But my brother decided to be generous and told me to bring the car. With no more reasons to back out, I was driving at 6 in the morning, with no idea what I was up for.

It was raining when we arrived at the training “camp” in Angeles. It was muddy and I was worried about my shoes when all of a sudden a few guys, looking all the same with their “semi – kal” hairs, white shirts and maong pants, came running toward the car - they have no shoes on. They were tasked to help us with the equipment we had.

When I entered the hall, the trainees were all seated on the floor. I then asked one of my companions where the girls were. I was told that they were the ones in front. I remember I even argued that those were also male trainees, because well, they look like boys. They had short hair cuts and had the same outfit on. From the back, they really looked like boys. I instantly felt awkward and in my most pasimple way, removed the necklace I had on. It was my dire attempt to look simple enough so that these girls wouldn’t be intimidated by how I look. I was really worried. I didn’t know how I was going to relate and talk to “roughened” up girls. There I was in my pretty clothes and shoes, with my hair neatly combed and my face all made up – and then there they were, with hairs cut to the bare minimum, with plain white shirts and maong pants. I didn’t think less of them, I just thought I would not in any way be able to “connect” with them.

When I had the chance to speak to some of the girls, I realized we were more alike than I thought. They have boy troubles just like me, they have vanity concerns just like me, and they have great great dreams.

I learned that all the trainees should be a graduate of a four year course. Most of them studied criminology. Still, it left me dumbfounded when I found out that some of the trainees were nurses, lawyers, engineers and there was even a dentist. I was quick to ask, “Why?”. I worded the question carefully. I told them that I was curious. But in all honesty, I was wondering why girls with a degree and a chance to work as “something” else would choose to go through such a rigorous training to become a policewoman.

The answers I got were varied. Some wanted to serve, some wanted to prove that they could handle the training, but majority of them wanted to be like their fathers who were policemen themselves. But one common reason is the financial benefits of being a PNP officer.

No matter what the reason, it pained me to see girls, some even younger than me, having had to cut their hair, eat in less than 10 counts, train as much as boys train, and be cut off from their loved ones for 6 months.

Necessity is often the driving force of the universe. These girls chose to be in their present circumstance because of need. I may not understand why. I may feel violated by how they are being trained. But it is necessary.

They said when they are finished with their training they would go to a spa and have body scrubs and facials. That made me smile. Even though externally we look different, we still have the same inner core; a girl’s heart.

I just admire everyone I met that day. I admire their strength and determination. I will never look at a policeman, and more so a policewoman, the same way again.

Flapping

Today, I conquered my fear. (haha) I finished my oral surgery, complicated extraction requirement today. It's a big deal for me since during my first few cases in OS, I was trembling with fear. I guess most clinicians were. But I was so scared then that I almost always needed Gayle to be there with me to tell me what to do.

Earlier today, I did my flap procedure, still, with Gayle (and Bebang). In flap procedures, you would incise the "gums" and reflect it to see the bone beneath. More often than not, bone has to be drilled to extract the tooth. Ok, this is way too technical. I inserted a (WARNING)graphic photo so that you would know what it looks like.

Lukewarm

Indifference is very precarious. I hate the concept of being completely unaffected by things, people or events. People were crafted with built – in emotional triggers and we are supposed to react. But I just can’t understand how some people could just crawl into little shells and be blissfully ignorant of the things outside their puny worlds.

I’m frustrated because lately I have noticed that I myself am retreating into my own shell. As far as I know, I love people. A friend even told me that I am irritatingly cheery most of the time. She said it fascinates her that I would say hi to almost everyone I come across with at school. But for weeks now, I just feel so subdued and apathetic toward others. I would just say it in Filipino because I can’t think of a word that fully captures what I’m trying to say. “Sawa ako.”

I don’t know why. And I don’t think it’s because of certain people’s behavior because it’s not just one person, it’s everyone!

Maybe I’m just so engrossed on trying to finish my requirements. And maybe I’m just tired and worn out.

So friends, please forgive my “halfheartedness”. I don’t mean to be mean, and it’s not that I don’t care. I’m still figuring it out. Sooner or later I have to return to my old “irritatingly” cheery self, but for now, just let me be “sawa”.

I took a deep breath and listened to the old bray of my heart. I am. I am. I am. ~Sylvia Plath

Case Discussions and Grinding

I started the day by riding an overloaded bus that crawled through the heavy traffic in Caloocan. Standing for an hour and a half cramped with all the people hurrying off to wherever they were headed left my feet sore and quite frankly, I felt physically violated as people would squeeze themselves behind me to get off of the bus. It was like grinding, only in a Baliwag Transit Bus. Ugh!

When I got to school, I sought my professor, Dr.A, to discuss one of my cases. In UPCD, Case Discussions are always big deals, at least for us clinicians. In case discussions we would prepare the patient work up, all the necessary diagnostic aids and the treatment plan. We would then conjure every ounce of knowledge we have acquired since we first stepped into the college, hoping against all hopes that we would be able to answer whatever our professors would ask.

Case discussions could bite both ways for us. We could prepare well and prove that we are worthy of the privileges of being a UPCD student or we could embarrass ourselves by staring at distant with glazed eyes as our teachers wait for an answer to their questions.

This particular discussion I had to do today was for my Pedodontics Case. (Pedodontics is the branch of Dentistry that deals with the management of young patients. Kids.) I had put off this discussion since last week since I never really liked treating kids. But a week of procrastination didn’t improve my confidence. I didn’t know what to expect. I was flustered and was ready to postpone the discussion again. But the need to graduate is greater than any fear. I marched up to Dr.A and asked her if I could discuss my case with her.

After 2 hours I was finally given the go signal to start the case. Relief washed over me. That wasn’t too bad after all. But I know, even now as I prepare for yet another discussion, that I will again go through the grueling emotions that come with every case.

The rest of the day went by in a blur. At the end of the day, I was back in one of the Baliwag Buses, tired and worn out, but happy that I’ve accomplished something.

Note to self: I will never again ride an overloaded bus. No to grinding in PUB's.

Have Your Fill

I'm fine.

People have been wondering how I have been. I'm fine. So maybe I'm being sucked in once again by my need to finish college. So maybe I'm fussing about the weight I gained during summer. So maybe I'm giving in to my emotions a lot lately. So maybe I'm thinking about bigger and brighter opportunities to become better. So what?

I know. All these are superficial. I know I'm not really fine. I miss talking about the "real" state of things.

But really, if for updates' sake, I'm fine. Really.

I'm Done Planning

We spend our whole lives worrying about the future, planning for the future, trying to predict the future, as if figuring it out will cushion the blow. But the future is always changing. The future is the home of our deepest fears and wildest hopes. But one thing is certain when it finally reveals itself. The future is never the way we imagined it. (Grey's Anatomy)

I have always been a planner. Ok, maybe I’m not the typical organized “OC” that has an itinerary every single day. I don’t plan for my short term goals. I plan for the big ones.

When someone asks me where I want to be in five years, I’ll give an answer in a jiffy. No hesitations. No pauses. I have it all planned out; perfectly to the last detail. Ask me what I’ll be doing after I finally graduate from dental school, and I’ll narrate every single plan in a heartbeat.

Not having plans scare the hell out of me. I feel disoriented whenever things don’t go my way. It’s frustrating when people don’t do what I want. And it’s painful when I can’t even live up to what I have decided to do. Plans are necessities, at least for me.

It was just recently that I realized that making plans, at least solid, step by step plans, is useless. I daydream about the future and what I want it to be like. I plan for it. But who’s to say that will happen? Even in my greatest efforts to think about my future, the circumstances, events, people – they are all out of my hands. Things could change. I could change.

So I figured I won’t fuss. Things will happen, when they happen, if they will happen. I keep on pining for my ideal life in the future. But I just got hit by reality. This is my life. No one could say I have a life ahead of me. This is it. I have to live for the moment, not yearning for anything else. I have to do what I can, enjoy what I can, hope for the best, and just live.

Trust is a very difficult thing for me. But I’ll learn.
